M&S to trial offering branded food products

Published: 10 June 2008 00:00

Marks and Spencer has announced it is launching a trial to offer 350 branded products in 19 stores across the North East.

The trial will account for around 7 per cent of the retailers product range. It will run from the end of June and means that consumers will be able to purchase major brand name food, toiletries and household products at the chain for the first time.

"We'll be offering all the key brands that we don't currently offer. Hero products like Tabasco, Marmite and Colgate toothpaste," says a Marks and Spencer spokeswoman.

The trial aims to offer convenience without changing the positioning of the M&S brand. In the company's preliminary results, M&S revealed plans to target a five per cent share of the foodmarket, an increase of 0.7 per cent.
