Scottish supermarket summit

Published: Oct 2008

Scotland has held its first ever Supermarket Summit. Top retailers from the UK came together to discuss how they can work with the Scottish Government to secure a sustainable future for Scotland's primary food producers as well as sustainable economic growth for Scotland.

Chaired by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, attendees included senior directors of Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Somerfield, The Co-op and Waitrose. The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment and Environment Minister Michael Russell also attended.

"Today's first ever supermarket summit is a very welcome and positive start to our future work with top retailers," says Salmond. "The Scottish Government is working hard to bridge the gap between the producers and consumers of food. That is why we have gathered together Scotland's major food retailers, to look at how we can work together to provide the public with Scotland's freshest finest food."

The retailers and ministers agreed a number of measures such as joining a retail forum to push forward the national food and drink policy, and a target to reduce the use of carrier bags by 50 per cent in the next year. The summit will follow up with regular meetings to track progress.
